The Red Light District

Many years ago, Harry Stiller, a great Formula 3 Champion, who as a much older man, kindly took me aside and explained about the “Red Lights”. I am, to this day, in debt to Harry for that advice. Maybe it is time that Charlie Whiting got all the young GP drivers together and gave them a “Masterclass” in the “Rules”. Lewis lost the World Championship last year through what might be called “inexperience”. Maybe he lost the race in Canada because of, again, “inexperience”. Someone should have told him. Personally, I don’t think David Coulthard would have made the same mistake. What do you think?

Geoff is right about Charlie giving the young bucks a pep talk.
After seeing what happened in Canada, never has there been a bigger need for all the drivers to go through a refresher course on the set rules. Th main problem is that whilst these drivers are the best in the world on the racetrack, it would seem obvious from the Lewis incident that at anything under 75mph, their brains are not fully in gear! Perhaps it might also help if they all went back and studied the old highway code
on braking distances....at £25,000 a nose cone it might save tthe teams a nice bunch of change in a season.

Never mind the error, a little humility would not have come amiss after ruining someone else's race besides his own.
I found the quote; 'I don't care what they throw at me.....'
rather arrogant considering the crass misjudgement he made and the perfectly reasonable penalty applied. Let's face it a one race ban would not have been out of order as it was under safety car rules.
I am sure that in time Lewis may well become a great ambassador for the sport, but he does need to be a little self-centred right now.

I agree. Lewis did show a touch of inexperience but the team must take the lion's share of blame for not telling him to expect a red light and he did show some good presence of mind in making sure it was his main title rival he took with him. In fairness - Lewis did make a full and clear apology, it's more than you'd get from a footballer or a politician. I would love to have seen what would have happened had Lewis not hit Kimi, assuming Lewis was not hit from behind. We would have had the top 4 or 5 cars racing from a standing start in the pitlane, cold tyres and brakes, feeding in onto a corner, trying not to cross the white line - something was going to give at some point - but what fun!
