LEWIS: IS IT ALL TOO MUCH?

July 3, 2008 09:56 by GT

I am writing this on Thursday afternoon and am looking forward to Silverstone, the Motor Home and a full weekend of the British Grand Prix.

I was at the F1 Testing last week. McLaren had the ground floor of the Clubhouse for their sponsors. Lewis was in attendance and I glimpsed someone under real pressure. Sure, he clocked fastest time for the three days, but was this meaningful?

Every day, I have been reading about Lewis in the Press. Yachting, helicoptering here, helicoptering there, Catwalks, you name it and he's done it all over the last few days. I have not read much about Massa or Raikonen, but then I do not read their local press. Maybe they were just resting.

Last night I saw Nadal. I wanted Murray to win, but Nadal, what a committed player. You could see it in his eyes. he was there to win. I saw nothing about publicity. I saw nothing about sponsors. I saw someone who was totally concentrated on just the one thing. Winning.

Maybe, by the time you are reading this, Lewis will have won the British Grand Prix. I sincerely hope so. Either way, I would say to his manager "please do not count your success on income alone".

Geoof, you ahve been hiding your light under a bushel! We know you as that bumbling old fool, one of the very few who can muster a sense of humour, strange though it is, to keep us simpletons amused. Now you have dashed that thinking by writing and eminently sensible column: shame on you.

Have a good time at the G.P. and I note you didn't advise the whereabouts of your motorhome, presumably for fear of invasion by we riff-raff.

Barty.

P.S. And no, I wouldn't dream of having anything to do with either old badger face of Mr. Brooks.

Greetings chaps,
here I am wandering through this wonderful new facility, built and funded by GT himself, after Gordon turned down Geoff's offer of allowing him and HM's government the sole exclusive sponsorship deal for this first year. Perhaps £2M was a bit too strong for starters Geoff....next year perhaps!

Anyhow, what was the question? ahhhh yes, young Lewis and all the hype etc., a question of too much too soon me thinks. Money has a habit of doing funny things to people who acquire it too quickly; it tends to make them lose a certain sense of perspective and diverts their attention from the main purpose which, in his life, is driving a racing car faster and better than anyone else on the planet. What's happening at the moment is indicitive of him having the wrong personal management at the most crucial point of his career. He needs to be fully focused on just his driving and the team's major sponsor and sod all else otherwise, he'll burn out too quickly and lose that edge he worked hard to establish last year. All this other recent hype can only distract him and effect his performance on the track in the long run. I don't know who is managing him commercially now but whoever it is should take a step back and let him concentrate more on the real issues of just driving the car and then, the rest will follow naturally in the wake of his results and success.
